EMDR Therapy in Chiang Mai, Thailand

EMDR Therapy in Chiang Mai, Thailand

What is EMDR therapy?

Is your present shaped by the past?

EMDR therapy in Chiang Mai, Thailand heals past traumas through using rapid eye movements to deconstruct and reprocess traumatic memories. It is an effective form of therapy for healing trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and phobias.

EMDR sessions are available from my clinic in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Understanding EMDR

EMDR uses simulated eye movements (similar to those experienced during REM sleep) as a way to process repressed emotions. The client is shown how to focus on particular elements of traumatic memories and reprocess them through use of the EMDR technique. The result is decreased emotional intensity and release of anxiety. EMDR therapy is particularly effective for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and phobias.

How does EMDR work?

We begin by splitting a trauma experience into its core components, assessing each based on emotional intensity. The level of emotional response within the body serves as a gauge to determine how each component (or "targets" in EMDR terminology) is still affecting you today.

For instance, a person who has been mugged might feel frightened to go out alone. During the therapy, they may be asked to recall that traumatic experience and guided to bring each element of the memory to the forefront of their mind. Simultaneously, the therapist will periodically inquire and evaluate the emotional reactions in the body.

The sound of approaching footsteps, for example, may trigger an anxiety response, while the memory of waking up in a hospital bed might bring with it a feeling of fear and confusion. Each reaction is scored on a scale of emotional intensity, ranging from 1-10. By breaking down trauma into specific targets, EMDR therapy concentrates on processing one target at a time, in order of emotional intensity.

I will evoke the memory and associated feelings while simultaneously initiating sets of conscious eye movements and guiding you in affirmations. The EMDR method achieves swift integration of emotional targets, leading to a reduction in anxiety related to the memory as a whole.

The relationship between EMDR and regression therapy

EMDR therapy can be combined with regression therapy to facilitate accelerated healing of traumas. Regression therapy enables individuals to access and process memories from earlier life stages, often revealing the root cause of emotional patterns. EMDR may be used in a way that is complementary to regression therapy, allowing for memories to be processed in an even faster way.

The connection between EMDR and hypnotherapy

EMDR shares commonalities with hypnotherapy, as both techniques aim to access and reprocess memories, thoughts, and feelings. Hypnotherapy utilizes guided relaxation and focused attention in order to access an enhanced state of awareness, known as a trance, where individuals are more receptive to suggestions and can explore memories more effectively. EMDR, conversely, employs eye movements and other forms of bilateral stimulation to actively process traumatic memories and heal anxiety

While each therapy possesses unique benefits, they can complement one another when used together. Hypnotherapy can help clients relax and access memories more readily, while EMDR facilitates rapid processing and integration of these memories, leading to healing from trauma and relief from trauma-related symptoms.
