What is Reiki

Reiki is a healing art in which high vibration energy is channelled for the purpose of healing physical, emotional, mental and spiritual problems.  “Rei” means “universal” or “spirit” and “ki” means energy.  Reiki sessions are available from the clinic in Chiang Mai and can also be channeled over distance.

The Origins of Reiki

The origins of Reiki lie in Japan. Mikao Usui was a Japanese seeker who, through his jobs, had opportunities to travel. He was interested in exploring healing traditions from around the world, and particularly focused on discovering what it was that gave some people the ability to channel healing.  Through his travels, he came to the conclusion that perhaps every person has healing abilities, which through training can be enhanced and structured.

Usio was a meditation practitioner and, in 1922, while on a meditation retreat, he asked spirit to give him a system which would enable any person to develop their natural healing abilities in a safe and structured way. It was in his meditation that he received visions that eventually formed the basis of the Japanese Reiki healing tradition that exists today.

Shortly thereafter, Usui opened the first Reiki practice training centre in Tokyo where everybody interested was invited to receive the first level of Reiki, which enables the channelling of healing energy for the purpose of healing oneself and others.

The ability to channel Reiki energy for healing is passed from master to student through a ritualistic initiation process. Over the process of tuning hundreds of students into the art of Reiki, it became clear that the initiation is a powerful process that often has a strong impact on the student.  Psychic perceptions are enhanced and it is not uncommon for students to make various life changes as they deepen in relationship to themselves and those around them.

Usui’s original teaching process demonstrated that, when he felt a student was ready, he would invite that person to receive the next level of initiation allowing them to progress in understanding of consciousness and working with subtle energies.

Japanese versus Western Reiki

The research of Frank Anjuna Peters suggests that the original Usui System of Reiki Natural Healing contained 10 different levels of attunements. These levels had to be completed in their entirety in order for a student to become a master and be empowered with the ability to teach Reiki and channel transmissions to somebody else.

Usui, as the founder of Reiki, became the first Reiki master. Dr. Hawayshi was one of his students who also trained to master level (2nd generation master).  Mrs. Tanaka became a third-generation Reiki master teacher, training under Dr. Hawashi. Mrs. Tanaka fell in love with an American man and moved to Hawaii, where, for several years, she practiced Japanese Reiki happily.

On December 7, 1941, Japanese bombers bombed Pearl Harbor. As a result, Japanese people on Hawaii experienced persecution at the hands of the Americans and it was necessary for Mrs. Tanaka to stop practicing Reiki. Several years later, she re-emerged and began offering teachings again.

For personal reasons, she chose to change the structure of how she taught. A new version of Reiki was born with a path of training spanning four levels – Reiki 1, Reiki 2, Reiki Master and Reiki Teacher. This is the system of Reiki that most people know today and, over the last 60 years, has become one of the most popular healing arts existing in the world today.

While Reiki still exists in Japan, it is hard to find and often prohibitively expensive. Through the changes that she chose to make, it was possible for her to continue to teach this precious healing art and offer it to the world.

How does Reiki work?

In order to begin to understand how Reiki works, it is useful to discuss the four bodies that make up a human being.

The physical body is the one that most people are more familiar with. Common treatment in the modern world focuses primarily on prescribing medications in order to heal problems in the physical body. A wiser choice is to understand the needs of this body in terms of food, sleep and exercise.

The emotional body is the body of feelings. It is in the emotional body that anxiety or joy are felt. It can be said that emotions, in many ways, control our lives because everybody wants good feelings and does not want bad ones.

The mental body is the body of thoughts. Most people spend their lives relating to the continual dialogue that is going on at the level of the mental body instead of directly relating to the world around us.

The spiritual body is the highest vibration level.  This is the energetic body that lives after death. It forms an aura in which imprints of all the other levels can be detected. Changes in the energy body reflect into the lower levels. Reiki practice directly works with the spiritual body in order to affect change.

Changing energy for healing

During a Reiki session, the practitioner places his hands on the body of the client and channels high vibration energy for the purpose of healing. The client is always fully clothed and in control. Touch is safe and nonsexual and, for some people, the healing power of touch by itself is enough to make a important impact on their life.

Reiki feels warm and comforting. As it is so relaxing, it is not uncommon for the client to fall asleep while receiving Reiki, which only amplifies the healing effects.
