Real Change Comes From Inside

How Can NLP Therapy Help You?

NLP therapy in Chiang Mai, Thailand

NLP is one of the therapeutic modalities available at the Chiang Mai Wellness Centre.  NLP contains a sequence of rapid change technique that make use of brief trance states to help clients achieve change.

NLP is an acronym for Neuro Linguistic Programming.  NLP  focuses on understanding how people internally represent reality.  It was developed by Richard Bandler and John Grinder during research for a Psychology PhD at UCLA.

NLP was originally based on one core assumption: the fundamental error in psychology is that it focuses on studying people who are “broken”.  It was decided to try something different and study people who excel.

What Is NLP Therapy?

The structure of excellence

Bandler and Grinder choose people who were the top in the world in their respective fields and studied how they represent reality, how they think and how they feel.

They discovered striking similarities.  There were clear patterns of thought and imagination that enabled these individuals to be the best at what they did, whether they were an accountant, a lawyer, a doctor, a sportsman or an artist.

Successful people imagine themselves being successful.  Top athletes visualize crossing the line first.  Business leaders have an internal belief that the deal will be closed before they walk into the board room.

It was found that they approached problems in similar ways too, usually from a core belief  that a solution will be found and a self assured inner dialogue.

An interesting question was proposed: can any person become successful through modeling the internal behavior of success?  Is it possible to learn a new way to think?

The process of change

Bandler and Grinder studied many forms of therapy in search of the techniques that would empower their clients to make rapid change.  A core influence was examining the work – and language patterns – of Milton Erickson “The Godfather of Hypnotherapy”.

In their 1979 book, “Frogs into Princes”, Bandler and Grinder introduced a large bulk of their findings to the world.  The change techniques revealed new understandings of exactly how an approximation of the world is modeled in the mind and how that model can be changed.

NLP as a tool for therapy

NLP as a world in it’s own offers many tools for the therapists toolbox.  Language is a reflection of thought, and thought is a reflection of emotion.  Therefore when thought changes, emotion changes.

As a core coaching model, the meta-model (devised in NLP from studying the language patterns of Noam Chomsky) introduces precise questions to ask the client during the counseling potion of a session to change perspective and thought.

The rapid change techniques within NLP are effective for resolving inner conflict, healing trauma, overcoming limitations and building confidence.

In many respects, NLP and Hypnotherapy have become somewhat fused as each borrows knowledge from the other.  NLP techniques are effective even in light states of trance yet work more powerfully in deeper states of suggestibility.
