Regression Therapy

Heal from the past

How Can Regression Therapy Help You?

Regression therapy in Chiang Mai

Regression is a therapy technique in which repressed emotions are healed through visiting unresolved past experiences.

Under hypnosis, clients have increased access to the contents of their memory.  Regression therapy focuses on identifying the root cause of emotional patterns and healing them in the mind.  Regression therapy might form one component of personal therapy and can be facilitated from the clinic in Chiang Mai, or online.

What Is Regression Therapy?

How does regression work?

The client is trained in entering medium to deep hypnosis and taught how to take themselves to a safe place in their mind.  Once they are feeling comfortable, they are asked to focus on the emotional feeling to be explored.  They are then then taken back in their memory to the moment (or moments) that the emotion was created.

While there are many ways to practice regression, one technique involves putting the contents of one’s life on a screen cinema.  A past memory can be explored as if it a scene on a movie, which enables for a safe dissociated perspective through which to process past events.

The client is encouraged to trust whatever comes to their mind as the therapist guides them in redefining and healing the memory.   The result a shift in the emotional pattern at it’s root, often leading to freedom from that emotion in the present.

What is memory?

Memory itself is an interesting thing because, in it’s essence memory is quite subjective.  A group of people who share a dinner party will have a very different memory of what happened, even though a common reality was shared.  For example, a conversation might have been enjoyable for one person yet boring for another.

Memory is actually an encoding of an event resulting in storage in the mind.  That encoding depends upon many factors, including beliefs, previous experiences and the internal dialogue experienced during the situation itself.

Another interesting point to mention is that memory itself changes over time.  For example, one’s memory of an argument with a partner will naturally shift as emotions are processed and the memory itself moves from an associated (emotionally attached) perspective to a dissociated (emotionally unattached) one.

Therefore, one might define memory as an “historical evolution of a perception of an event in the past”.  The way one thinks about something over time naturally changes and, as a result, emotions change as well.

The story that we tell ourselves

There is a constant inner commentary in the mind.  This inner voice judges, labels, dissects, compares, examines…. Creating an inner commentary or “story” about what is happening around us.

A relationship is formed between oneself and the story in the mind, and the result is emotion.  A large portion of emotion is self-created through thought.  When thought changes, emotion changes; and vice versa.

It is interesting to note that the pool of memory (or storehouse consciousness as known in Tibetan Buddhism) that is stored in the unconscious mind is actually a library of stories – internal commentaries that we have told ourselves about what happened in the past.

When one’s inner commentary about what happened in the past is edited in hypnosis through a perceptual change technique, the result is release of emotion that most often has a “knock on” effect resulting in shifts in emotional patterns as well.

During regression therapy, higher resources are taken back in time to younger versions of ourselves healing the effects of trauma and the resulting emotional patterns at their root.

How does the past effect the present?

In order to be at peace in the present, one must find peace with the past – because what has not been resolved from the past will surface into consciousness in the present.

An unaware person will blame what is happening outside of them as being responsible for the emotions felt inside.  A conscious person will recognize that every emotion triggered by a present day event, relates to unresolved circumstances in the past.

Projecting the cause of emotional pain onto those close to us has damaging effects on relationships at the core, and often leads to defense patterns and breakdown of relationships – particularly when a partner is “blamed” and asked to change.

Healing might be defined as the journey towards wholeness, a personal journey towards actualization through resolving the trauma of the past.

Through healing the past, one takes responsibility for all of one’s own emotions.  This leads to inner peace, self confidence and an improvement in every relationship in the world.

What is past life regression?

Most emotional patterns result from experiences in this life. However, it has been observed that under hypnosis some people can remember memories from previous lifetimes.

The instrumental work of Dr. Bryan Weiss has brought this phenomena into mainstream awareness, particularly through his book Many Lives Many Masters.

From a clinic perspective, it might be argued that past life experiences remembered under hypnosis are metaphorical stories enabling the working through of emotional patterns from a dissociated perspective.  The spiritual perspective considers these memories to be accurate recollections of past lives.

However, no matter what the truth may be (and I personally belief in incidence of both of the above), what cannot be denied is that past life regression is one of the most powerful forms of therapy available within the hypnotherapy arsenal.
